Discuss postmodernism and the popularity of available meaning in contemporary media.

Postmodernism in film generally ranges from the 1960s to the 2000s, there have been plenty of film examples in the 21st century. Films the likes of the Truman show, Austin powers, postmodern films poking fun at themselves through to more serious type films for example blade-runner

“Bedard 2020” the film abides by many tenets of the philosophy. For starters, a main conceit held throughout the film is the distinction between what is real and what is artificial. The idea of, “what is human” comes into play,

  1. What kind of narratives ember in place of grand narratives (also called Metanarratives)?

Religion is a grand narrative “Charles Taylor” After explaining my faith in Jesus as the Way, Truth, and Life, the young “progressive Christian” said, “Well, that’s your narrative. My narrative is different.” When they responded to me this way, I smelled the spirit of postmodernism.

The Olympics has a grand narrative this idea spans millennia the is from ancient Greece till now

“John potts” states the Olympic Games functions as an idea of Western civilisation, complete with its origins in the ancient Greek world.

A meta narrative is a story about a story explaining other little stories

Goswam Sribas” states that a meta narrative is a story about a story, encompassing and explaining other ‘little stories’ within totalizing schemes.

  1. Does this afford or negate diversity of representation?

Without diversity and representation companies’ entities can’t afford to sit by and do nothing you need diversity this can reflect on the quality of products with having people with varying life experiences helping to thrive to add at a high-level diversity helps to push for new perspectives in all areas

Kimberly S. Reed state” Imagine a time when you felt excluded, that your voice wasn’t heard, that you were ignored, or not included in a conversation at work. The feeling of exclusion goes against a very basic human need we all have to belong and feel valued

  1. What Literary Devices I.E., Irony, Parody, Pastiche, Bricolage, Hybridity, Intertextuality, Magical Realism, Self-Referentiality, Cynicism ETC.

Narrative irony

The simplest explanation is that irony occurs when the intended meaning is the opposite of the actual meaning. “Maria Magher” states Narrative irony, more specific and easier to identify, occurs when there is a disconnect between what the characters and the reader know, which often happens in dialogue. Narrative irony is sometimes called “dramatic irony.”

Mock narratives / parody’s

Fake new since 2016 has been the term for debate in presents years its intention and extensions are unclear; it is a concept people are still trying to understand why it is.

Pastiche / Homage / Collage

The word derives from the Italian word ‘Pasticcio’, (a pasta dish like lasagne) – the nearest rough translation is hotch-potch, a mixture of ingredients. Musically a ‘pasticcio’ is similar. It refers to an opera made up of parts composed by different authors.

Bricolage / Patch up mix of

From a structuralist perspective, bricolage is understood as a metaphor for mythic thought. On the practical level, bricolage takes objects that have been used before and reorganizes them within a new perspective

Hybridity

  1. García-Canclini “states ‘Hybridity’ has been used by authors in the social sciences, literary, artistic, and cultural studies to designate processes in which discrete social practices or structures, that existed in separate ways, combine to generate new structures, objects, and practices in which the preceding elements mix

Intertextuality

The concept of intertextuality is a literary theory stating all works of literature are a derivation or have been influenced by a previous work of literature

These are just some of the things that make up postmodernism

All in their own way helping push forward things in a narrative sense.

  1. Is postmodernism generally relied upon as a means of critique in your field of practice.

I guess it would be lighting design, music production, they all help to create atmosphere and to set moods being criticized and taking feed back is most important. So yes it would be part of my field.

  1. Is postmodernism relied upon as a means of critique in your field of practice?

Yes with out critique there would be no new boundaries being pushed for design and lighting shows it would all be boring and drab.

  1. What are the limitations of these devices?

it has holes all the way through it I struggle with this seeing things that are not there main weakness I can see thus far is internal inconsistency with in itself.

Bruno Goncalves Rosi states” Another way of defining postmodernism is by its claim that there is no absolute truth. But is not this an absolute truth? Is it not an absolute truth, according to postmodernism, that there is no absolute truth? This circular and contradictory reasoning demonstrates the internal fragility of postmodernism.

As C.S. Lewis said, “You cannot go on ‘seeing through’ things forever. The whole point of seeing through something is to see something through it. It is good that the window should be transparent, because the street or garden beyond it is opaque. How if you saw through the garden too?
